Answer to the question: Can you have too much protein?
Can you have too much protein? That is the question being reviewed in this video by PictureFit.
The general guideline is to consume roughly 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight. This is however now being debated in the nutrition industry. Some people believe it should be closer to 1 to 1.2 grams per kilogram. It has been shown that consuming the recommended daily allowance coupled with exercise do result in better overall body composition and strength. But just how much is too much?
There is indeed some cause for concern for excessive protein intake. Most often it cause problems in the kidneys. It has even been shown that long term high intake of protein can result in kidney stones. It doesn’t stop with kidneys though. Even the liver can be negatively affected causing various liver related problems. Issues with bone health has also been identified as a potential problem. Be aware though that all these issues must be seen in context and there are not necessarily scientific evidence of these issues in humans.
So in reality it has not been proven definitively that a lot of protein is bad for you. After a certain amount of protein however the benefits don’t really increase any more so there is no reason to go over that level. And as I always say, too much of a good thing is bad for you! This informative video goes into more detail regarding the question. Make sure you watch it!
